23/07/08 - Coventry A (12) vs (7) Warwick A by Jonathan Fleet
Warwick traveled to unbeaten league leaders Coventry on Wednesday evening knowing only a win would leave them with a realistic chance of winning the league this year.
Coventry play in a large all deep pool, and Warwick would need to be at their best to compete. The first swim was won by Coventry, but Warwick defended well ,and on their second attack Matt Wardle opened Warwick’s account. Coventry started to settle down and equalized 90 seconds later, and then scored 3 more goals before Aam Streeter pulled one back for Warwick. Coventry struck again at the end of the quarter, leaving Warwick trailing by 3. After a minute of the second quarter Matt Wardle scored again, only to have Coventry score on their next attack.
Warwick were looking a lot more aware of the threat posed by Coventry though and started to defend well as a team and frustrated the home team for the rest of the quarter. With just over a minute to go Lee Jeys scored for Warwick leaving them 2 goals adrift. Goals from Scott Haystead and Lee Jeys early in the 3rd quarter brought Warwick level before Coventry scored, but a second from Haystead squared things again. Unfortunately a late goal by Coventry meant Warwick still started the final quarter a goal down.
Coventry scored after a minute and then Luke Streeter was excluded, and Coventry scored the man up. Coventry scored two more as Warwick tired in the big pool, and were 4 goals up with half the quarter gone. Warwick continued to attack and forced 3 exclusions but failed to convert any of them, and let Coventry in for a late break away goal, so losing the game with the final score 12-7. The slow start cost Warwick the game, it meant they had to work harder chasing the game, and the huge effort of the 2nd and 3rd quarters showed in the final quarter.
